Boxing Day in Belize is one of those traditions that I almost forgot about since moving to the U.S. Back home, it was such a big part of the Christmas season, but after so many years away, it kind of slipped my mind. Thinking about it now, I can’t believe I haven’t celebrated Boxing Day properly since leaving Belize. It was always one of those days that felt like a chance to truly unwind, reset, and soak in the holiday spirit. December 26th wasn’t just another day. Back in Belize, Boxing Day had its roots in British tradition—a day when the wealthy would give “Christmas boxes” to their workers. But for us Belizeans, it was so much more than that. It was about family, fun, and taking a breather after all the Christmas craziness. How We Celebrated 1. Horse Racing in Burrell Boom: If you’ve never been to the Burrell Boom races on Boxing Day, you’re missing out. Growing up, my family and I would head out to the village, ready for a day full of energy and excitement. I can still hear the cheers and feel the thrill of watching the horses fly past. It was a big deal for everyone…families, friends, and even strangers coming together to enjoy the day. 2. Unwinding with Family: Boxing Day was that rare time to truly slow down. After the chaos of Christmas Day: cooking, cleaning, and entertaining…it was like taking a deep breath. You’d dig into the leftovers (rice and beans and ham always hit different the next day), sit around with family, and just relax. No pressure, no rush…just pure, simple downtime 3. Music, Culture, and Community: In some areas, you’d hear brukdown music or Garifuna drumming, and you couldn’t help but feel a part of something bigger. Boxing Day always felt like Belize at its best…celebrating culture, community, and good vibes. 4. Outdoor Fun and Sports: Whether it was a casual soccer game at the field or cricket matches in the villages, Boxing Day was about being outside and enjoying life. It was simple fun, butthose moments left lasting memories. Looking Back Now
