Please send encouragement!
Friends, I am feeling a bit down. I've put in 465 hours into studying Spanish and still have very little ability to understand native speakers or speak easily when put on the spot. I know lots of grammar and vocabulary, so there's that. Please send me encouragement and positivity!

Margot, please don't get discouraged. You are perfectly fine. Start listening to Spanish podcasts even if you don’t understand everything. You’ll train your mind to understand. I like Easy Spanish on YouTube tube and also the Cuéntame podcast. Listen every day and you’ll see a change and how much you actually know. As hard as it is try to relax when speaking and know you going to make mistakes and just accept it and one day you’ll find out there are less mistakes. I was talking with a patient and using tu and usted in the same conversation and they did not care at all. Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are amazing with that much studying.
Buenas!
Excited to refine my Spanish.

Hola que tal? Bienvenida 🤗
Living in Costa Rica
Hola, I have been in Costa Rica since September 2025. I am a temporary resident here and live in my house with my 5 dogs. I was widowed in 2025 and am fulfilling a dream My husband and I had to live in a warm tropical climate. I need to be able to converse in stores and with my neighbors who are all Tico. I do a weekly tutorial session with a tutor in Columbia, he is a fellow Brit. I am 70 and a retired Emergency Room nurse, I have worked in the UK, USA, Ireland, and Canada ( my most recent home before here). I found the videos I watched on You tube, for this course, have made a huge difference to my speaking. Duolingo gave me a huge vocabulary, but not the skills to form sentences

Hola Anne, que tal? I am also an emergency department nurse and I retire in May. Good luck with your Spanish journey. I think you’ll love this program. I have learned so much much.
NO PROBLEM - NO PASA NADA
Hi everyone! This is my first time making a video for you 😂😂 Please don’t mind any mistakes in my English 😊it usually happens when I’m nervous. Today I’d like to talk about the phrases “no pasa nada” and “de nada.” If you want to sound more natural in Spanish, understanding how to use these expressions is really important, so let me explain. Have an amazing day! 💙

Special characters ñÑ¡¿ for non-Spanish keyboard layouts in windows
Since I'm from Germany, and my keyboard-layout is in German, I was looking for a way to easily type the special Spanish characters. I did some research, and though there are multiple ways, I found this one the easiest. Maybe this is old new for most of you, you have implemented it different, or you're not on windows. In that case, just disregard my post. I just thought it can't hurt to share it here. This way, I just have to press the right ALT key plus "n" to get "ñ", just like you would press right ALT plus "q" to get the @ character. This is a little step by step guide for the setup, with help from Gemini ;) Quick Guide: How to Install and Use AutoHotkey 1. Installation Go to autohotkey.com and click Download. Choose Download v2.0 (the current standard). Warning, some malware scanner might trigger a false positive, since this is a scripting tool. Run the installer and follow the prompts to complete the setup. 2. Create Your Script Right-click anywhere on your desktop or in a folder. Select New > AutoHotkey Script. Give it a name (e.g., Spanish_Chars.ahk). Right-click the new file and select Edit Script (it will open in Notepad). 3. Add the Code Delete any existing text in the file and paste your shortcuts. For example: ; --- Spanish Special Characters (AltGr Combinations) --- ; Spanish n (ñ / Ñ) <^>!n::Send "ñ" ; AltGr + n <^>!+n::Send "Ñ" ; AltGr + Shift + n ; Inverted Exclamation Mark (¡) <^>!1::Send "¡" ; AltGr + 1 ; Inverted Question Mark (¿) ; Using the "/" or "?" key for international compatibility <^>!/::Send "¿" ; AltGr + / <^>!+?::Send "¿" ; AltGr + Shift + ? (Note: In v2.0, the Send command uses quotes around the characters). 4. Run the Script Save the file and close Notepad. Double-click the script file to run it. You will see a green "H" icon in your System Tray (bottom right corner of your taskbar). This means the script is active. 5. Managing the Script To Stop: Right-click the green "H" icon and select Exit.
