Back with another one!
Hey all. It’s been a minute! Work has been kicking my ass! I haven’t been practicing much as I want to but today I made it a point to not only get on my skates but to record some of it. I practiced one leg balance skills, crossovers, open/closed book transitions (still struggling here) and what I THINK are backward crossovers (vide attached so you tell me). As usual I bring for your personal entertainment, my awkward and horrible skating! Don’t go too hard on the kid though. This was my first time practicing this technique. 😩

Hi Jay, Thanks for being brave and sharing your progress. Every time we get on skates and we are practicing and not falling we are progressing. Keep practicing and slowly incorporate the good tips you are getting. Paula Pride and others gave good tips about backward crosses. It does not always look pretty at first, but it gets better with consistent practice. The braveness is working through this process and sharing it with others. What I find is the more I practice I come to understand the movement intellectually, but my body also has to understand itself in the physical movement. I have had the experience of having learned a move and it looks fine and someone gives me a new tip or and my body learns something new and I am understanding and executing the move even better( the move feels better and more natural and even more controlled). We might not truly understand a tip (or why it was given) we get today until months or years later. This happens even a year(s) after you think you have a particular move locked down. Keep up the good work and being brave. Practice, Practice, Practice and be patient with yourself.

Welcome to the community!
Penny for your thoughts
I'm currently taking a skate instructor course. May I ask you 3 questions? <If "yes" proceed to next step> 👇🏻 1. What frustrates you most about skating? 2. What skill do you wish you had? 3. What would make you feel more confident?

1. What frustrates you most about skating? Being frustrated that I cannot master a move to the point I am no longer having fun. No matter where I am in my skate journey, I want to learn and have fun. When I stop having fun, I will likely stop skating. 2. What skill do you wish you had? Having a better technique for skating on beat consistently no matter what moves I am doing and being able to do one foot pivots confidently and controlled back-to-back on either foot. I would like to also learn partner skating. 3. What would make you feel more confident? Learning the progression of moves and techniques. In other words, learning where and why mastering certain move and techniques will allow you to do the next more confidently. That is why I like Knejie’s video - “before you can do do this, do this”
Got any advice? Observations?
Feb 19, 2026. Just some made up drills I did. Side note: it was 50° out (cold for here. 80° a couple of weeks ago) so I can't believe that guy had his little baby out there.

@Albert Schepis Albert keep up to good work. When you do cross overs turn your head and upper body in the direction of the crossover pretending you are beginning carving out a circle. You can lead your torso with your head and arms. This does not have to be dramatic -so do not over correct. Do it slightly first and then see if it makes doing the crossover feel more natural and effortless.
Just got the Riedell 120 (Juice) with the Reactor Neo Aluminum plate
If you recall, I initially bought the 120 (Uptown) with the PowerDyne Thrust Nylon plate based on research for the best beginner setup. The rationale was that the Uptown nylon plate has flexibility that beginners may benefit from vice the hard and rigid (Juice) aluminum plate that is less forgiving if you make a mistake. Obviously, being a newbie to the craft, I chose the first. Even on Riedell’s site, they list the Juice as “… ideal for intermediate and advanced skaters upgrading to a performance-focused rhythm setup.” They also describe the Uptown as “This reinforced boot combines with the sturdy PowerDyne Thrust nylon plate for a skate that’s built to support your moves and encourage you to try new ones.” When I tried on the Juice, it didn’t feel sturdy enough and when I was testing the edges, it just felt like it wanted to collapse when I leaned on my right skate. This was upsetting to say the least, considering all the research I did and the amount of money I spent. I would have just returned them and purchased the Juice but I can’t use UPS from out here in China so I bought the Uptown to replace them (only to later on find out that I may have gotten away with just replacing the stock cushions with harder one…obviously I didn’t know that was a thing). Anyhow, I’m not going to use the new ones yet until I feel like I’ve got a grasp of all of the fundamentals down. But I’ll have my upgrade in hand when I’m ready to move forward. P.S. I got harder cushions so I’m going to replace them on the Uptowns and see if they feel more stable.

Started with the Riedell 120 with the nylon plate. After a few months changed to a falcon aluminum plate. The aluminum plate gave me more support and stability. I felt more confident skating. Enjoy your new set up.
