😅I need your help. 😅
I'm working on my own music alongside you. We're doing this together. I just thought I'd remind everyone that's the case lol... and practice what I preach! So here I am asking for feedback. https://s.disco.ac/qnkhejohjcyw PHANTOM: This is a song that at this point is over 10 years old that I wrote with a guy named Vlad Holiday. It was my first proper co-writing session when I moved to New York and original, which is the first song in the playlist, never landed anywhere, and my skills since then have dramatically improved. The second version I started during covid that's a string remake of the original (still planning to get vocals on it)... but I've never found the right male vocalist to get on it. I'm considering singing it myself, although I'd need atleast a week of warm-ups and concentrated practice to get my singing chops up to snuff for this. Do I tackle it myself? Do I try to find another vocalist? Do I do both versions, the string version and an updated version of the more electronic downtempo vibe? The OG vibe worked great for 2010 but needs to be updated for 2026. Originally, the reference was Mickey Echo, if you all remember him (writer of Stay by Rihanna). Who's the reference for this now? This is one of the songs that I'm digging out of the crates and working on refinishing. Would it be helpful for me to break down my process as I work on finishing this in a video that I would share with you all? Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate you all. So grateful for the community that's building and growing here.

Yes!! Try the vocals! I would LOVE to hear that! The worst thing that could happen is you don't like how they turned out and decide to find another vocalist after all, but someone once told me that we underestimate ourselves and overestimate our competition. 😅 As for updated references, I actually love the Mickey Echo performance and think it still works! People are especially nostolgic for the early 2000s and 2010s I feel. Plus even the younger generation is always discovering new music on their own. When I was teaching in 2023, I had students who listened to Hey There Delilah and Running Up That Hill like it was the hottest new thing!
🥵Hot take: Most composers don't have a pitching problem.
They have a catalog problem. You can't pitch your way out of having three finished tracks. Agree or disagree? Let's talk about it!

@Tim Jeffcoat this was my thought! Obviously I’m not a pro and I’m here to learn, but I think in the long run, having only a few tracks isn’t going to help build lasting relationships.
Some Validation Today!
Yay! Someone likes my art! I just had two songs forwarded by Taxi to "a major league EXCLUSIVE Music Licensing Firm that's been placing TAXI members’ music in Film and TV for years" in the genre of AMBIENT NEW AGE INSTRUMENTALS. Fingers crossed, it will lead to something! The actual songs are posted under Glenn's recent request for songs that are sync ready, and for those interested, this is the brief that I responded to: ------------------------------------------------------- This Company would really love to find Down-Tempo Instrumentals that could be heard on a playlist with the following references and others like them: "Sunrise" by nelward "Freedom at the 45th Floor" by Pauline Anna Strom "Forest I" by Peter Davison "Pastel Memories" by Lionmilk Please submit Ambient New Age Instrumentals that feel both hugely spacious and deeply calming! Your Compositions should be serene and atmospheric, emphasizing slow evolution throughout, rather than more traditional "Pop" style structures. Flowing soundscapes, gentle, very slow-developing melodies and motifs, little to no rhythmic content, and an overall sense of relaxation and mindfulness are all recommended to nail this pitch. Your arrangements should be uncluttered yet immersive, with no abrupt changes, big dynamic moments, or distracting moments that might jar the listener. Instrumentation in the general stylistic wheelhouse of the references and similar Ambient New Age works is recommended, including airy synthesizers, synth pads, gentle piano, soft strings, drones, and organic elements like chimes or light sound design. If you're using virtual instruments or samples, they need to be high-quality and current-sounding. Original Compositions only, please! All submissions should be around 2 to 4 minutes in length, give or take. Buttoned endings with a natural fade-out will work best. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Hooray!! That's SO exciting, Tim! One of many wins to come!
Intro and discussion
Hi everyone! I am 1-day old in vault-years. I like what I see/hear. Like most of you, I've been writing, recording and performing for years. But this is a new adventure and I'm truly excited to take it with you. I'm going to introduce myself by playing one of my songs that most closely shows my 'wheelhouse' - 'Something to Say'. https://youtu.be/zzBDx0IBNm0 It's a song that delves into what ordinary people find in themselves that allows them to become heroes. Where I hope for YOUR help is to shape this new one...'Here'. https://youtu.be/jOn-PLEyjgU It's just at demo stage. And I purposely attempted to get away from my wheelhouse to something more contemporary. Is it contemporary? I've played it for a few people. Feedback is mixed: primarily I'm hearing that the format isn't normal or clearly defined...it seems to meander. I'm still in the honeymoon stage.... so, I love it. How could I make it less meander-y. More verse/refrain-y? Or should I? I see that I've typed a lot! Is this too much for a first post? Let me know. Thx, Tom

Hi Tom! So excited to have you here on this journey with us. Your songwriting and vocals are beautiful! I don't think you necessarily need to make "Here" more verse-chorusey unless that's something you want to do. As a songwriter, I love when songs are more of a vibe than something that is structured out like everything else, but that's just my two cents!
Feedback for Cinematic Electronica Underscore
Jumping on the feedback train! Sync Vault friends - one of my aims, getting started in sync licensing, is to compose emotive, slightly mysterious vibing tracks for productions like fine arts dance, quirky indie films and shows, and documentaries, etc. I write other genres, but have been going deep into cinematic electronica production for the past year or two. I’m trying to figure out what my strongest sync “lanes” are, and Glenn encouraged me to share something I’ve written recently, to show one of the directions I’m taking. Glenn also encouraged me to start finding video content to practice underscoring, so I found a short dance performance film on Vimeo and paired it with a recent track of mine. It’s probably a little quirky, but I’m sharing it anyway! The audio is not mixed yet, so I’m looking for more feedback on the production. I’m open to any kind of notes and welcome all varieties of opinions. Most importantly, I wanted to join in the vulnerable experience of sharing something I’m a little unsure about. I’m also excited to keep learning, experimenting, and moving toward pitching! Some possible feedback points: -What genre does this feel like to you? -What video mediums could you see this working with? -Is it hitting as an audio dreamscape or overly simple? -Do any of the sounds come across as dated in a bad way, or in a good way (vintagey)? -Is it quirky in a cool way, or in a not commercially marketable way, lol? Thanks for checking it out - I’ve been loving hearing all the original work you guys are creating! https://s.disco.ac/wkmmnhdoocup

Dawn! I'm loving this! There's no such thing as "too" quirky! (In my personal opinion). I've only watched a couple episodes of Stranger Things, but this sort of gives me the same vibes. Also reminds me of Firefly Lane on Netflix if you haven't watched it! Dreamy and retro, 80s to 2000s time period. -What genre does this feel like to you? Definitely feels like Electronica to me like Tim said. -What video mediums could you see this working with? I could see this used in so many montages or cinematic scene in a drama. Like I said, it reminds me so much of the montages they show in Firefly Lane when the characters are reminiscing about dramatic memories of their past. -Is it hitting as an audio dreamscape or overly simple? Not overly simple at all! -Do any of the sounds come across as dated in a bad way, or in a good way (vintagey)? Not dated! It does make me think vintage at first, but I think there are so many modern elements too. I would definitely not say dated in a bad way. I think there are many ways this can be used! I loved the visual too! Not sure how often it's actually used, but I read in one of my Sync books somewhere to pair your music up with video if you're unsure if it's sync ready, so I'm definitely going to have to try this in the future!
